Location: Levine Children's Hospital.... Charlotte, NC
Nikon D600 w/85mm 1.8
About a week ago, I was fortunate enough to work another Flashes of Hope event. This event would be for patients who have had transplants for various reasons. The weather wasn't really cooperating with us, as you will see some mist and rain drops in pictures. Even with the weather not being perfect we were able to use ziploc bags to cover our cameras. I have never used this technique but it worked perfectly.
When I first arrived, I had to scout a location as to where I would position the families and not get soaking wet the entire time. I located a nice brush of bushes that curved at an angle that I thought would be great for a backdrop. Now all that was left was to wait for the families to line up. It wasn't long that we had our first family.
Every family that showed up for photos were so grateful to have the opportunity to take pictures. There were numerous families who made the statement that they haven't had family pictures in years. Hearing statements like that add so much more to the moment of being able to capture these families.
Every child had a different personality. Some very happy, some silly and some very shy. The kids that appeared shy would shortly begin to smile once the mascots from the Panthers and Knights arrived. The smiles on these kids faces was priceless. I don't think I could have taken a bad image if I tried. It may have been raining but those smiles definitely brightened the day!
One of the most rewarding events of my day at Levine Children's Hospital, was seeing a child from my first event. He was bound to a wheelchair and not very excited about getting his picture taken. On this day he was walking around and playing cornhole. No wheelchair in sight!!! When I saw him I shouted his name and he gave me the biggest smile saying "I remember you" I could have left at that moment and my day would have been complete.
As time passes more and more families were lining up which made our Flashes of Hope family so happy. I would also like to mention that there was a new addition to the FOH by the name of Christina Roth, Owner of Vibrant Photography. The awesome thing about her joining the team is that we both shoot Crossfit events. She is a member of Crossfit Northlake and a awesome photographer. It was a pleasure working and formally meeting her. It was great she was there because there were plenty of families to shoot. We received hugs and high fives all day long. Made the day so worth while. As long as I am not previously booked, I will always say YES to shoot for Flashes of Hope. I look forward to the next one. Stay Tuned and Thank You for taking the time to read this. These children are amazing and so strong and brave. Through these pictures you can truly see how special they are.
